Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for a Lead AI Researcher based in San Jose, CA. The Lead AI Researcher will focus on developing, implementing, and refining AI security measures to protect AI models. Daily tasks include conducting research, analyzing data, recognizing patterns, and developing frameworks. The researcher will also collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the robustness and efficiency of AI solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of AI researchers, providing scientific guidance and mentorship
  • Define and execute ambitious research roadmaps aligned with company objectives and market opportunities
  • Conduct original research in machine learning, deep learning, and emerging AI paradigms
  • Develop novel algorithms, architectures, and methodologies that advance the field of AI
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to transition research prototypes into production systems
  • Publish high-impact research papers in top-tier conferences and journals (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, etc.)
  • Present research findings at leading AI conferences and represent HydroX AI in the scientific community
  • Stay current with latest AI research trends and identify opportunities for breakthrough innovations
  • Build strategic partnerships with academic institutions and research organizations
  • Mentor junior researchers and foster a culture of scientific excellence
  • Balance theoretical innovation with practical applications and business value
  • Contribute to AI safety and security research initiatives

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field
  • 8+ years of experience in AI/ML research with a strong publication record
  • 3+ years of leadership experience managing research teams or projects
  • Deep expertise in machine learning fundamentals and advanced AI techniques
  • Proven track record of publications in top-tier AI conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, etc.)
  • Strong programming skills in Python and deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch)
  • Experience with large-scale distributed computing and cloud platforms
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong mathematical foundation in statistics, optimization, and linear algebra
  • Experience translating research into practical applications or products
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and drive research projects to completion
  • Must be local to San Jose, CA area - this position is on-site only

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in AI safety, alignment, or security research
  • Experience with Large Language Models (LLMs) and foundation model research
  • Knowledge of reinforcement learning, multi-agent systems, or robotics
  • Background in computer vision, natural language processing, or other AI domains
  • Experience with federated learning, privacy-preserving ML, or differential privacy
  • Industry experience at leading AI research labs (OpenAI, DeepMind, FAIR, etc.)
  • Track record of successful research-to-product transitions
  • Grant writing experience and funding acquisition
  • Previous startup or entrepreneurial experience
  • Speaking experience at major AI conferences
  • Collaborative research experience with academic institutions
